Hailsham is an attractive market town located in East Sussex. The community has enjoyed a long, rich history and still retains many of its old world charms. Hailsham is a relatively safe town, falling below the national average for robbery, burglaries and other criminal offenses. This may not sound like a fitting argument for a bed and breakfast stay, but it is an important item to consider. Safety and security nowadays should be a top priority. The area that is modern day Hailsham was settled centuries ago in 490 AD. Between 1154 and 1189, Sir Richard Covert of Bradbridge was named the Lord of the Manor of Haylesham. The area continued to grow with the construction of the Saint Mary's Church which was built between 1425 and 1450 followed by the Fleur-de-Lys Inn which was established in 1542. Today, the Fleur-de-Lys Inn stands as the town council offices. During World War II, a bomb fell near Saint Mary's. It bounced over the Post Office building, shattering most of the windows and destroyed the auxiliary fire station. More recently in 1990 the Cuckoo Trail was opened up for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. While staying at a local bed and breakfast, some visitors visit the Hailsham Heritage Centre to learn more details about the town's history.
Hailsham may be a historical town, but it also has its share of modern entertainment. Visitors can take in a live musical concert at the Pavilion Theatre.
