Hailsham Grange, East Sussex guest house is an ideal location to visit the many nearby attractions in beautiful East Sussex and Kent. There are stunning walks over the nearby Sussex Downs with views of the white cliffs and Beachy Head towards Eastbourne. For the less energetic why not visit the picturesque villages of Alfriston, the ancient Cinque Ports of Winchelsea and Rye with its cobbled streets. Kent boasts of Tenterden a small town set in the Garden of England with vineyards close by. A “must” is a visit to the small church at Berwick influenced by the frescoes of Renaissance Italy, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant transformed this traditional Sussex church with a series of murals. They used their friends as well as local people and places to depict the life of Christ against the background of war torn Britain. The artists lived 10 minutes away at Charleston which was the home and country meeting place for the writers, painters and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group. The interior was painted by the artists Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell, and together with their collection forms a unique example of their decorative style. The house is open to visitors.
Garden lovers can visit Great Dixter at Northiam A Tudor house with a famous twentieth century Arts and Crafts garden. The house was bought in 1910 by Nathaniel Lloyd, author of books on brickwork and topiary, and was restored by Edwin Lutyens. Nathaniel designed the framework of the garden and it was planted with great flair by his son, Christopher Lloyd, author of many good books on plants and planting. Christopher Lloyd was born at Great Dixter and left the estate to The Great Dixter Trust on his death in 2006. The garden reflects the interests of its creators. Pashley Manor is a quintessential English garden located on the Sussex and Kent border in the heart of South East England’s garden country. Pashley offers a sumptuous blend of romantic landscaping, imaginative plantings and fine old trees, fountains, springs and large ponds. Sissinghurst Castle Garden designed by writer Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson.
